Barcelona, Spain: Things To Do Aside From Gorging On Tapas

Hams and sausages! That's the come-on of Barcelona

, the top city of Spain. But there's more to the meaty dishes than meets the tourist's eye. When in Spain, explore the underground delights -- the indie and indie pop culture that rocks. And of course, you must not miss the street food!

Ye Old Cathedrals: Certainly seeing the sights of Barcelona is a must. That's why you are flying out there. Spain is one of the oldest civilized European countries. Its historical saga is connected to the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. Naturally, the city has a lot of interesting architecture, customs and traditions and the food is always superb. But as a tourist with no idea where to begin, start with the cathedrals.

The cathedrals reflect the religious history of Spain. The Sagrada de Familia (Holy Family) is one structure you shouldn't miss. Interestingly, this building enraged the younger Picasso, another Spaniard who was 29 years younger than the force behind the Sagrada de Familia, Antoni Gaudi. The striking cathedral has 18 spindle towers and three different grand facades. It is not yet completed since its start in 1882. The target date for completion is 2026 and that's a long off yet.

Don't limit your cathedral look-see to this massive structure. Go and check out the Barcelona Cathedral. This is the main arena of worship and it is said to be over a thousand years old. The stunning gothic giant is packed with historical religious treasures. This is indeed a must see for tourists gadding about in Barcelona. Other spectacular temples are Catedral Tarragona and Iglesia de Santa Maria del Mar.

Festivals: June is one busy month for the people of Barcelona -it's a fiesta month. A month of carnivals and lots of feasting are in store for you. You should get invited to a fiesta to sample a culture that reflects the people's hospitality and love of song and dance.

The Bull Run in Barcelona is a test of one's bravery. This is a macho festival held every July in Pamplona. If you are in Barcelona City, you can take the plane out a day before the festival or watch it on TV in your comfortable holiday apartment.

The famous or infamous Tomatina Fight is one fun festival that will soak you in tomato juice. Rivers of the tomato sap drench revelers and all are encouraged to throw tomatoes at anyone - friends and strangers. The Tomatina Fight festival is held every fourth Wednesday of August in Bunol Village. Join an organized tour so you won't get lost. The village is some 30 miles from Valencia village. To get there ahead of the crowd, you can take a flight to Valencia from Barcelona.

Where to stay? Shop for a holiday apartment online. You can find one that's immaculately furnished with rooms with a view or one that is smack in the center of everything in Barcelona City.
