With regional airlines offering flights to nearly every European city there is
, holidaying in one of them doesn't have to cost the earth, so there is simply no excuse to stay at home when you can have an inexpensive few days away either at the weekend or during the working week.
With plenty of renowned art galleries to visit, a fascinating history, an eye fest of architecture, wine, food, shopping and great weather, as well as a beach on the doorstep, you have all the ingredients for a perfect holiday.
Barcelona attracts many great painters and sculptors many of whom have left their print on the city in the way of great architecture or art galleries. Picasso and Tapies both have museums dedicated to their works which will take you weeks, if not months, to get around and fully enjoy every aspect. The yet to be completed construction of the Sagrada Familia is also a Gaudi magnum opus that has changed the development of architecture and engineering. Many of the main attractions and sights, including the ones mentioned, can be reached by walking from a number of lodging choices in Barcelona, from low end hostels to five star hotels.
Millions of visitors go to Barcelona just to admire Gaudi's works, and it would be a shame to miss out on his masterpieces if you are in the area. Since the conception of the Sagrada Familia project more than 125 years ago it has always been privately funded but now visitor's fees collected at the entrance are used to pay for the work on top of the donations.
Antoni Gaudi also began the project Park Guell, intending it as a playground to unwind for the well heeled and upper classes, and the top of the park has a terraced area with 360 degree views of the park and the city. A dedicated learner and his love of nature resulted in a creation that manages to avoid the use of straight strokes in his work, which is seen in the curved construction stones, twisted iron effigies and animate shapes. There are some brilliant examples of his work in the park incorporating these elements, and the Sagrada Familia is a masterpiece with centenary arches, coned shaped roofs and tree inspired columns, and the same can also be observed in Casa Museu Gaudi, the place where Gaudi spent most of his time.
The Torre Agbar, lauded for its daring architecture was conceived by Jean Nouvel, and its form mirrors the mountains of Montserrat and resembles a soaring jet of water. At a staggering 144m tall, the tower is at the forefront of building energy efficiency with motorized glass blinds that automatically open and shut to adjust the temperature inside, but these glass blinds are also green by nightfall when the building is illuminated with LED lights in over four thousand five hundred windows panes.
In the city centre there are several places you can take a walk and admire the scenery, such as Montserrat, prominent for its noticeable rocky outlines and natural beauty, or the Montjuic hill where the 1992 Olympics were hosted.
Things don't happen till late in Barcelona so you may find empty dance floors until 2 to 3 but there are lots of late licensed bars that stay open until late, open from 10 onwards. These bars are not clubs but you can either chill or party on depending on your frame of mind at that time. They tend to get busy after midnight since the Spanish are night owls and although they call themselves bars there's really little difference between them and clubs apart from higher prices and the fact they close earlier. Watch out for PR people giving away free entry passes to some of the biggest named bars, you will easily see them hanging around the city streets. These passes are handy as they usually offer complimentary or promotional entry to clubs with expensive entrance drinks so they can save you quite a bit of money.
You don't need to be rich to get away to exotic places where there's guaranteed something new to interest you including the culture, ancient history, classical art, good cuisine and unique shopping all in one place. Everyone needs a change of scenery every now and then and a few days away is enough to see new things and strengthen bonds with friends and relatives. Rental
