Barcode Software System- How it Originates?
Barcoding system evolves in the retail industry for almost 70 years. Barcoding system proved its function to be effective and more efficient in the processing way compared to the capabilities of human beings. It was also developed more for the better functions and special usage in the retail and other field of industry. Even now, barcoding system is widely used not only in the retail industry but also discovered as useful also in the other fields of industry like education, military, security, production and marketing industry.
Barcoding sytem was first originated at the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration in 1932 . It was developed as a project by Wallace Flint and a group of students from the university for the purpose of having an efficient system in data collection and product delivery of the merchandise to the customer. The process they practiced is simply putting a punched card on every merchandise and the punched card will served as the barcode that is to be scanned on the machine reader that automatically updated the inventory system and produced a bill to the customer. That was the first usage of the barcoding system and many businesses used and embrace it.
In 1948, modern usage of barcoding system was discovered in Philidelphia at the Drexel Institute of Technology. Graduate students of Drexel Institute of Technology, Bernard Silver and Norman Joseph Woodland partnered together to give solution for the problem in reading the products information during check out processes at a local food chain store. They create together and they produced an application for the problem and they called it a "Classifying Apparatus and Method". These application are described by Bernard Silver and Norman Joseph Woodland as the medium of identifying patterns. Many businesses used their system and it was accepted commercially in 1966. Because of the efficiency and effective functions of the system, many businesses realized that they really need the system to support their business. In 1970, Logicon Inc. named it as the Universal Grocery Product Identification Code (UGPIC) as an industry standard. The first retail trade that used the system was the Monarch Marking while the Plessey Telecommunications, British company was first used it for industrial usage.
The barcode software system was widely used as a standard of symbol in the United States and was developed again by George J. Laurer in 1973 and named it as the Universal Product Code (U.P.C.). On that following year, the grocery stores embraced the first barcode scanners on the products with their corresponding barcodes pasted on the merchandise. It was the start that the business industry, bigger or smaller businesses demands to use the barcode software system on their company.
Nowadays, many companies are specialize in making a barcode software system and develops more the existing system for the better and special usage of the companies in the future. Some companies also hire programmers and software developers to focus and develop more the existing system.
