BarkOff: Stop Dog Barking With Ultrasonics

The Device

BarkOff is a device that emits an ultrasonic signal that immediately gets a dog's attention and interrupts his concentration. If he were barking at the time, the ultrasonic signal would detract him from the object he was barking at, and immediately stop his barking. The BarkOff unit itself is about the size of a small TV remote, and is battery powered for portability. The cognitive signal range is said to be from 10 to 30 feet, depending on the dog's hearing ability, so it can be used to affect the barking of a neighbor's dog.

Sound Simplified

For the purposes of analyzing hearing, sound is measured in "acoustic vibrations per second (Hz). Humans with a average, normal range of hearing can discern sounds within the frequency range of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Although we cannot hear anything below 20 Hz, we can feel it. When your car shakes from the rap music in the car behind you, you can bet that the frequency is below 20 Hz, giving it that powerful bass vibration. At the other end of the spectrum, humans generally can't hear sounds above the frequency of 20.000 Hz.

Dog's Hearing Ability

Dogs have the ability to hear within a much wider sound spectrum...40 Hz to 60,000 HZ. The breed of the dog and it's age will influence the dog's ability to hear within this range. Some breeds have the characteristic of becoming totally deaf with age, while others may become deaf as a natural process of aging.

We all have noticed a dog's ears prick up when they hear a sound. The mobility of their ears, in part, allows them to hear better than we humans. They move their ears to better receive the sound, giving them the same effect as when we cup our ears to better trap sound waves.

Because of the dog's ability to hear sounds at a higher frequency, they are subjected to everyday stimuli that are most often unrecognized and unknown to humans. This is the science behind the use of high frequency dog whistles and barking control devices (such as BarkOff) that only they can hear and respond to. Other examples of high frequency sounds that humans don't notice may come from the household vacuum cleaner and hot air balloons passing overhead. A dog's sensitivity to sound is also greater than humans. This is why a dog's response to an unexpected noise is more dramatic than what we humans would expect that noise to elicit.
