In Ancient Rome, people and animals were used for public amusement, it was the beginning of the concept of circuses which have amused and amazed people right through the Ages. In Rome, gladiators fought each other to amuse the Emperor and the public, and animals from far off countries were introduced both to fight each other and to fight the gladiator. It was the day when the rich could show their wealth presenting their own gladiators and wear their finest clothes including barker shoes and entertain their friends.

Animals were brought from different continents to amuse the civilians, trained to fight either by being starved or beaten. The barker announced the Games and the show began.

At modern times, circuses remained popular but as the world was brought to everyone to the screen, the novelty of the wildlife side lost its magic. While not everyone has the chance to travel to see the animals in their natural environment, they no longer held the mystique of previous times.

But another element entered the debate about animals in circuses. How were they trained; were any cruelty involved and should it be permissible to use animals in such a demeaning way to entertain?

The argument was one of cruelty, one of us having far more perception and understanding than the people of centuries ago. Animal Rights were the cry. It was not possible to train an elephant to perform as it did if there was not some cruelty involved in its training. The same applied to the lions and tigers both of which looked fierce with the trainer in the cage both guiding and controlling them.

There was a reaction to the once popular circus while the way of life of the performers was becoming less acceptable. The perfecting of acts took hours of practice with little time for those performers to don their nice clothes with their barker shoes and go out for a night's entertainment themselves. The barker called the circus was in town and that was it; work! Practice makes perfect and some of the dangerous acts in a circus needed to practice when lives were at stake; so put away the fine clothes.

The argument from the circus owners that animals were treated humanely was disputed but there is a valid argument that the popularity of zoos flies against the concept of allowing wildlife its freedom. Zoos have a research element and no doubt a genuine caring for animals and their welfare. They may be the only place where tigers can be seen in years to come because of the loss of their natural habitat and the perceived value of their skins, bones and other parts and the consequential poaching.

It's an argument without a solution but the popularity of circuses has faded, though it may simply be because society with much more disposable income, with charter planes flying to many parts of Europe and beyond can think further than the day the circus came to town.
