Barney Miller was one of my favorite TV shows when I was a kid. Does that give away my age? I hope not! Actually, maybe I saw the reruns later in life and not the original TV show in its original inception. But for those of the younger generation, allow me to introduce you and clue you in to this fantastic and smart comedy centered around a police station.

Barney Miller was what is known as a "situation comedy", mmm kkk? These are shows whereby a laughable situation occurs and everything gets sorted out in the end. Sidebar: "situation" in this story does not refer to the one known as "the situation" character from the shores of Jersey BTW. Yet what was the premise for Barney Miller, and what made Barney Miller so popular even to this very day?

Barney Miller was a police comedy, a very smart comedy. Barney Miller took placein a New York City police station, Manhattan in fact. The Barney Miller series originally was broadcast from 1975 to 1982 on the ABC (American Broadcasting Corporation) network. Barney Miller was created by Mr. Danny Arnold and Mr. Theodore J. Flicker (no relation to Flickr). Most of the Barney Miller episodes were plumly directed by Mr. Noam Pitlik.

In the Barney Miller tv show, there was usually multiple subplots in any given episode, with different officers dealing with different crimes such as assault and battery, loitering, file-sharing, etc. About twice a year or so, some episodes would be very serious and dark. Often death was involved from shootings, muggings, and that sort of thing. The gallows humor was thick.

One of the lead actors in Barney Miller, Steve Landesberg, recently died after a battle with cancer. He was 65 years old. On a side note, Jack Soo, another star in the Barney Miller tv show also died of cancer in 1979 at age 61. Abe Vigoda, who played Sgt. Phil Fish is still very much alive and kickin, as is Hal Linden, who played the title role of Barney Miller, and Maxwell "Max" Trowbridge Gail, Jr. ("Jr."), who played theDetective Stan "Wojo" Wojciehowicz in the Barney Miller tv show.

They simply don't make comedy shows like Barney Miller anymore. All we get is the same old blah blah blah, peppered with non-stop sexual innuendo. Phooey!! Barney Miller 4-Ever!!
