Basement Rejuvenating Techniques For Painting Your Concrete Floors
Many garages or basement have concrete flooring
. The beauty of concrete is that you can easily paint it as compared to other more expensive treatments. Painting your concrete flooring will not only make it prettier but also more durable and easier to clean. If you paint it correctly, your floor will be able to last for years.
Where to begin:
Although it is not a very expensive aspect of your home renovation, it is not something that you can implement on an overnight basis either. First, you have to make sure that your floor is absolutely dry prior to starting your painting project. Just in case you notice some wet spots, especially if it's from the basement, it is recommended that you consult a professional to correct that seepage problem first.
Once you are completely certain that your floor is already dry, next step is to scrub it in order to free it from chemical residues and greases. This is important especially if the floor is in your garage or shop area. This is significant because the paint would not be able to adhere completely in the presence of any foreign material.
Some kitty litter would be very handy in absorbing most of that grease on the floor if any. Next, scrub the floor using Goof Off and then rinse thoroughly. Now scrub with a mixture of TSP. Now it will take several rinses until you can mop and have the mop remain clean. After about three days of drying, the floor is now primed for painting.
Additional prepping necessary prior to painting:
Using a sander or an 80-grit paper, remove any stuck materials on the surface of the floor and smoothen out the bumpy portions. A tack clothe will remove any sanding residue that the vacuum misses.
Now it is time to fix any cracks that might be present. Use Cement Fixall to plug these cracks or little holes and be sure to let it dry thoroughly.
Now it is time to paint!
First you will need two applications of a stain blocker and primer like Kilz. Take note that before applying the second coating the surface must be thoroughly dried after the first coating. After that, you may now paint the floor using your chosen top quality latex paint. A paint compressor or a roller will work fine for the painting.
Decorating your painted floor:
As a matter of personal preference you may want to make some geometric shapes or use faux stone or whatever you would like. You may run wild with your creativity at this point, just make sure to let the floor dry completely before finishing.
Finishing your painted concrete floor:
To finish your newly-painted floor, apply two coatings of Breakthrough sealer with the use of a quarter-inch nap roller. To be safe, wear a respirator mask when doing this as fumes are sure to be present during this process. Allow the floor to thoroughly dry for one final time.
Now your floor is complete. You may want to throw in an area rug or some decorative rugs for some highlight as it is still concrete after all. However, it is now beautiful concrete!
