Basic Dos and Don'ts prior to data recovery

Basic Dos and Don'ts prior to data recovery

With every step forward in the field of data recovery services, it is a fact that our systems are getting more vulnerable to data loss. From various system errors, physical breakdown, viruses, accidental or intentional deletion to disasters like fire or flood are common for big enterprises as well as individuals. We are the least concerned about regular backup and hence, the need for data recovery services increase to minimize major personal and/or professional loss.

Prevention is always better than cure as data loss aftermath is more costly than the lost data itself. Living in a mechanical arena, preventing data from deletion is all most impossible. But with certain precautions, you can atleast prevent permanent data loss.

Just after encountering any data loss scenario, you should be extremely careful in handling the troubled system. And the motto is to avoid overwriting deleted files by new data as deleted files are not physically erased and by overwriting, the chances of recovery almost diminishes.

Don'ts

Don't try home remedies by just listening to friends or from Internet.

Don't run the recovery Disk/CD/DVD shipped with your laptop/desktop.

Don't try standard Windows features, like System Restore to recover your files.

Don't restart your computer and avoid starting or using any unnecessary software.

Don't swap circuit boards on modern disks. A firmware/system area conflict issue can cause major problems.

Don't forcibly cycle a clicking or non-responsive disk. By doing that, the disk will be damaged further and will make the data unrecoverable.

Don't put the affected disk in the freezer and then try to spin it up. Moisture may condense on the disk surfaces causing head contact and hence, further damage.

Avoid browsing the Internet because browsers save cache to your disk.

Don't copy new files or install any program to that disk.

Don't defrag your hard drive.

If your hard disk is physically damaged never open it. Only a qualified hard disk data recovery professional in a certified Cleanroom environment should open a hard disk.
