Basic Guide to Safe Working At Heights
Guidelines for safe working at heights are a must-know by all employers and workers in the field of infrastructure building and maintenance. Those doing construction or any work from a height put their lives at risk almost every day. Even public safety may be at risk when the jobs being done are in areas frequented by people. So having sufficient knowledge on how to work safely at heights and enough common sense is their major safety net to prevent accidents and injuries.
Employers anywhere are always mandated by the government to provide and follow the necessary procedures for the safety of their employees. But whether you are new to working at heights or have been doing this for years, knowing the basic and general guidelines you must follow will add to your security at work. Below are some of the general rules:
Make even a simple risk assessment. This involves checking safety equipment and ensuring that they are in good working condition. Additionally, the employees should also be required to know how to properly operate and control this equipment and their other tools. Skilled and competent people should be the ones responsible to set up and train other workers on the use of machines. And as much as possible, opt to complete some jobs on solid ground if they can be done so.
Choose your equipment wisely. First, your personal safety gear should be fit for the job at heights you need to do. Even if you would only do a simple and short site or building inspection, make sure to wear the proper safety gear. Whenever necessary, choose using scaffolds or platforms instead of using ladders. But if you can't avoid it, use ladders for only a minimal period of time. Take note that ladders should always be positioned on a solid foundation.
Have fall protection equipment installed. Safety nets, guard rails and other relevant edge protection provides for your safety and the public as well. These are considered basic provisions for safe working at heights. Have these installed on construction sites even if it's only a small house. Sloping roofs should always have these edge protection fixtures set up.
Training employees in rescue procedures should also be conducted. If this cannot be done due to time constraints, make sure to have some poeple knowledgeable in rescue procedures on the site. This adds to safe working at heights and can minimise the number of casualties due to falls.
