Basic Nomenclature of Yarn Description

To those who are not yet familiar with how knitting yarns are described would do well by remembering that they are classified in what are so-called yarn weights. They are usually available as super bulky, bulky, chunky, worsted, sport, dk, fingering, and lace.

Super Bulky is the heaviest or thickest yarn, about as wide as an adult middle finger. It requires US size 17 or 19 needles to use.

Bulky is significantly thinner than the super bulky, requiring US size 13 or 15 needles. Two strands of the bulky approximate one strand of the super bulky.

Chunky is the next lighter size, and three strands are about equivalent to one of super bulky. It uses US size 11 or 13 needles. Utilizing only one strand sacrifices both texture and proportion.

Substitution of the worsted and other lighter materials in place of the super bulky, is not advisable, strictly speaking, but may be used in combination with each other to produce new and rather unique types of fiber. The adventurous will be rewarded with the happy feeling of having achieved something that is truly personal and individual.

Worsted is a yarn generally knit with a US size 7-9 needle and works up to 11-14 stitches per 4 inches. It is the most popular weight for knitting and crocheting, ideal for throws and many adult garments.

DK or double knitting slightly finer than the worsted, knit with a US size 5-7 needle and works up to 12-17 stitches per 4 inches, used for baby and light-weight adult garments

Sport knit with a US size 3-5 needle and works up to 16-20 stitches per 4 inches, a light weight yarn used for baby wear, sweaters, and lighter throws.

Fingering knit with a US size 1-3 needle and works up to 21-32 stitches per 4 inches, a very lightweight yarn used for baby wear, socks, and other delicate items.

Lace knit with a US size 0-1 needle and works up to 32-42 stitches per 4 inches

Especially for absolute beginners, these resources are a must considering the infinite amount of choices of what to buy and where. Depending on the creative inclination of the starting student, the way to a productive and/or lucrative endeavor will definitely be easier when thoroughly guided so.
