Basic SEO Promotion Through Keywords
SEO promotion (Search Engine Optimization promotion) of a website begins with finding
the ideal keyword phrase no matter what niche you've chosen to work within. Notice I said 'keyword phrase' and not just 'keyword.' That's because it's unlikely that you'll find a singular keyword that will meet the qualifications of an ideal keyword phrase.
First, chose a niche or topic that you are familiar and comfortable working with. This is not so much for SEO promotion as it is for you to be interested in and enthused about the site you'll be building. If you have neither interest or enthusiasm you won't do a good job or you may not finish the project. Next we need to consider the qualifications of the keywords you want to use.
There are at least four qualifications for that ideal keyword phrase. The following isn't in degree of importance. However, ignoring even one will handicap your site.
In order to have successful SEO promotion you need a keyword phrase that is searched for a minimum of 100 times per day, or 3000 per month. This isn't the most important qualification, but if there isn't any traffic, there can't be any money. Google's AdWords Traffic Estimator will show you monthly searches for a keyword.
Another requirement for the ideal keyword phrase is that there should be less than 100,000 competing sites featuring that keyword. What is meant by that is when the keyword phrase is searched the number of pages that the keyword phrase appears is less than 100,000. Google shows that number just below the search box near the top of the page. I will read, "About XXX,XXX results (0.xx seconds)."
Next you'll want to if there is commercial intent when the keyword phrase is searched. In other words, is the searcher likely or ready to buy when he searches for that term? Microsoft has developed a tool that can be found at http://adlab.msn.com/Online-Commercial-Intention/. This is known as OIC (Online Commercial Intent) and is expressed as a percentage figure. XX% of searchers for this term will buy if they find what they want. It's best to have a keyword with an OIC of 50% or more.
The fourth qualification that your keyword phrase must meet is that you must be able to buy a top level domain name that matches the keyword exactly. Only .com, .org, or .net are acceptable. What I mean by that is that if your keyword phrase is, "keyword phrase," then you must be able to buy the domain, "keywordphrase.com (or .org, or .net)." If the domain isn't available to you, start over with a new keyword.
There are free tools for getting the qualification information you need. They do require patience and time. Here are a couple.
The Google Keyword Tool (find it by searching Google for that term) will tell you the number of searches made per month for a keyword. It also displays a graphic of the competition for the keyword. You can get the number of competing pages by doing a Google search with quotation marks around the keyword.
I noted above that you can get the OIC (Online Commercial Intent) from Microsoft at http://adlab.msn.com/Online-Commercial-Intention/. Some days you have to have a little patience using it.
You can use any domain registrant to search for your domain. They all have the same availability information. the main difference among them is the price of the domain.
If you can afford it, and want to save time and not worry about having patience there are tools you can buy. Of all the paid keyword tools out there, there are only two that I recommend
At the top of my list is Market Samurai. There's nothing on the market that goes into the depth of keyword research that it does. Sometimes it seems to be a little pokey, but it is thorough.
The second product is MicroNicheFinder. It is fast and easy to use. It doesn't have the bells and whistles of Market Samurai. However, its domain name search feature leave MS still sitting in the starting blocks after MicroNicheFinder has finished.
There is another product out there that will guide you through all of the above and just about hold your hand taking you through it. It's called "Bring The Fresh." You can read more about it at my blog titled Guaranteed Seo Review, How to Get Guaranteed SEO Results and Rankings.
