If you want to make money with a website then you are going to need targeted traffic to convert and make that money for you

. But for many people, there is a big problem with generating the right traffic. As everyone knows, organic search engine results are the best way to receive traffic without having to spend a lot of money. But with millions of websites and billions of web pages already indexed, how can you even begin to get that traffic?

Well the answer is not only simple; it can also be very complex. The term is known as search engine optimization. While the term specifically refers to developing your website in a manner that helps the search engines index the site the way you want it to, the physical act of SEO can be come quite complicated.

For starters, you have keywords. A keyword is simply the word that a visitor might type into the search engine to find your website. It can be a single word or a group of words creating a key phrase. In the old days, all that someone had to do to show up at the top of the results was to have more incoming links then anyone else. Today though, it is much more difficult. Now you need links, but they have to be from trusted and relevant sites. Instead of just links though, you need to use keywords for the links as a means of passing a vote to your site with that keyword. As a result, today, the person who has more incoming links from relevant sites with a particular anchor text will show up higher in the results.

However, this does not mean that the website or even the page in question will ever be indexed. The search engines can only index so many variables and with so many website running content management systems that produce pages dynamically, there tends to be too many variables. As a result, the concept of search engine friendly links was developed. This system makes use of a well-known server-side control mechanism which allows you or the system to rewrite the link in a manner in which there are no variables in it; only text.


Of course this is not all search engine optimization is about. You have things like headings and keyword density to tune. Having too many keywords may seem like a good thing; but its not. At the same time, you have to determine which keywords on a page are more important and show their importance through the use of bold fonts and headings.

In the end though, if you put forth the effort to take care of the finer details of search engine optimization for your website, it will allow the search engines to index your website faster and for the words you would like to compete for. It is a balancing act though because if you go overboard with the SEO, you can appear as spam to the search engines in which case you can be de-indexed.
