One of the most important survival skills is to remain calm. If you are stressed and hyper, it is more likely that one will get injured. Calmness lets you think clearly and enhances presence of mind. It is a life saver. You can work through situations if you are calm. Imagine there is a flood in your region and everything is getting washed out. A lot of people panic and wait for someone to come and help them. However, until help or emergency personnel arrive think of alternate options, look around if you can hold on to something you can float on. A calm mind can think of a plan to survive in times of natural calamity.

Signaling has helped a lot of people survive natural calamities. A friend of mine told me about his experience when he was caught up on the roof of his house when floods hit the city. There was no way he could call for help by his mobile phone as there was no network. He tried screaming out loud and waving his arms at helicopters hovering above however he did not get their attention. He did not lose hope and starting arranging the tiles on the rooftop signaling help! It was a stroke of genius. His life was saved. It is a fact that signaling is one of the best survival skills.

No longer can you depend on your mobile phone to pass on a message or call for help. Thus, meeting at one place will ensure that no one gets lost.

Knowledge will only make us stronger. It is good to read and be informed about different kinds of natural calamities. Observe the weather changes, check weather reports regularly. Keeping oneself updated and informed can save lives in times of a natural calamity as you can action faster if you are well prepared and one can prepare when one knows about the calamity. If you live in an earthquake prone area, ensure the foundation of your home is strong and is built in a way where it can handle earthquake stresses. If you are struck by an earthquake and are indoors, check for a safe space in your house. Stay away from wall hangings or heavy objects. It would be good to cover yourself under a table so that you are protected. Switch off electricity, gas or the stove to avoid a fire. If you are outdoors, look for an open field; do not take shelter under a tree or a building.

Survival skills should be discussed and shared. Life is precious and surviving a natural calamity will only make you stronger.
