Basic Types and Designs of Pillow Block Bearings
What is the pillow block? Have you ever hear of it? Actually, it is a mounted bearing that is used to give support for a rotating shaft. It is a special bearing category. This type of bearing can be made up of various designs. Those are plain-bored, cast iron, solid, babbitt-lined, solid and split, flange bearings and take ups, bronze-bushed split, solid film and lubricating bushed pillow blocks.
The above mentioned different designs have different characteristics which can meet various application requirements. For example, the bronze-lined bearings are used for heavy loads, shock loads and higher temperatures, while Babbitt conform to the shaft and carry good embedding properties. Besides, the simplest pillow blocks are the plain-bored, babbitt and bronze-lined bearings. And these ones need precise alignment. Meanwhile, they also have the ability to distribute load over the bearing mount.
In addition to these designs, this kind of bearing also has a special collar design. The collar is designed to extend the inner ring of the bearing in order to introduce more holding force to the shaft as more rotating force is created and transmitted. And a set screw is then used to present the collar from getting loose during a reverse motion.
The pillow block is usually placed on a parallel line within the axis of the shaft. It is designed basically to provide support for shaft rotation especially when it handles various load types, particularly on pumps and conveyors. When compared to many other types of bearing products, they have some special features. One feature is that they are pre-engineered to be self-lubricating. They are designed with a reservoir to store lubricant; therefore, they don't need to be lubricated consistently in order to operate smoothly. In addition, they also have self-aligning property. Due to this reason, they can compensate for alignment errors or flexing of the shaft.
As we know, many common bearings can be further divided into various types, so do the pillow block bearings. According to use, this type can also be divided into two basic types, namely, the hydrostatic pillow blocks and the hydrodynamic pillow blocks. The former ones are capable of supporting heavy load at different speeds without metal-to-metal contact. Besides, they have a low-friction coefficient. While the latter ones are used at low speeds and eventually eliminate metal-to-metal contact when the speed of the device where bearing is mounted reaches its limit.
All in all, the pillow block bearings have their own features and designs, and they can be applied in many different places. Therefore, it is very wise of you to choose suitable pillow block bearings for your own usage.
