Basics Of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a common remedy for discolored or misshapen teeth

. Below, learn more about veneers and how they are applied.

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are very thin pieces of porcelain or plastic, among other materials, that can be bonded to the front of a tooth in a way that conceals stains, imperfections or damages. They can be lightened or darkened to match the surrounding teeth, and are often used to make a mouth appear healthier. In addition to helping a mouth look cleaner, they are also used to help crooked teeth look straighter.

What Do Veneers Correct?

Porcelain veneers are used for many cosmetic purposes. As mentioned above, they are used to mask stained or crooked teeth. They also are used to even out teeth that appear to be misshapen. Some patients have porcelain veneers placed to correct "gummy" smiles. For comfort purposes, veneers can protect teeth that are sensitive to the touch or to certain temperatures. Occasionally, veneers can correct an over- or under-bite.

How Are Veneers Installed?

The process of placing veneers can take a few visits to your dentist. One of the first steps is to form a mold of individual teeth to ensure that they fit properly. During the actual surgery, a layer of tooth enamel is removed so that the veneers can be placed with a strong adhesive. At this time, the teeth are cleaned to ensure the bond is very secure. Once placed, the dentist will adjust the color of the veneers to ensure that they match the surrounding teeth, or that they are the color the patient desires.

During a recovery period, roughly two weeks, the veneers tend to adjust within the mouth. Patients are advised to keep the teeth very clean during this period, and a follow-up visit is required after the two-week period. It is important to note that once placed, porcelain veneers tend to be irreversible. However, the sturdy nature of veneers, as well as the ability to resist color changes, means they will maintain a healthy appearance.

Why Would Somebody Choose Veneers?

The permanency mentioned above is a key advantage of porcelain veneers. Veneers are known to last for quite a while, and they keep up their appearance and require infrequent maintenance. The materials used are laminated to resist staining and will not change colors naturally. Discolorations are easily removed. Another key advantage is that they appear completely natural. To the naked eye, porcelain veneers are undetectable.
