Basketball Defending dribblers
A good ball handler can cause many problems for your defense, from penetrating the lane and going for easy buckets to breaking double teams and passing to open teammates. Disrupting an opposing ball handler's movements requires a broad range of skills. The drills in this section help your players improve those all-important techniques for defending opposing dribblers.
Lateral slides
Good defensive play requires the ability to move in all different directions quickly while maintaining proper position. The lateral slides drill works to enhance your kids' footwork.
What you need: Your entire team. One coach. One ball.
How it works: Position the team in front of you in rows of four players, with about 10 feet between each player. The players should assume the proper defensive stance.
You begin the drill by holding the ball out in front of you for everyone to see. When you shift the ball, your kids move based on your movement:
When you move the ball to your left, the kids shuffle in that direction (to their right) until you move the ball in another direction, and vice versa for going to the right.
When you raise the ball over your head, the kids move forward.
When you hold it out in front of you, the kids backpedal.
Coaching pointers: Make sure the kids' eyes remain focused on the ball while they move and that they aren't crossing their feet while shuffling. Straying eyes and crossed feet slow players down and make it tougher to stick with offensive players.
Deny the dribbler
The ability to stop players from driving to the hoop is one of the marks of sound defensive play. The deny the dribbler drill helps your kids become stronger in this area of defense.
What you need: One ball for each twosome
How it works: Break the team into pairs and give one player in each twosome a ball. The players with the balls line up along a baseline, leaving approximately 15 to 20 feet between each player. The other players face their partners, standing close enough that if they reach out, they can touch the ball handlers.
1. On your whistle, the players with the balls begin dribbling upcourt, trying to work their way to the other baseline while their partners try to make their progress as difficult as possible.
2. When they reach the other end, the defenders take over on offense, and the ball handlers become the defenders.
Coaching pointers: The key to defending well in this drill is maintaining good position by shuffling the feet. If the defender gets beat, he needs to sprint at an angle to the dribbler and turn him back and get into good defensive stance again; he can't shuffle and catch up to the offensive player. If an offensive player is getting down the court too easily, advise his defender to move over just a half-step in the direction of the ball handler's stronger hand. This forces the ball handler to dribble more with his less-dominant hand, which takes away a little of his quickness.
