Batik - South East Asian History

Batik is a word based on the Malay and Indonesian language to denote the art of making

fabric by using wax or other materials that create resist, and colorful dyes. Although Batik may be traditional, it is fashionable enough for people across the globe to wear it. Most people around the globe like it as it has many different designs and patterns for them to choose from. The art of making Batik has a long history that dates centuries back. While there are foreign-made versions, Malaysian and Indonesian ones receive the most attention.

The technique of making the fabric as well as the unique patterns is handmade, with wax as one of the main ingredients. When the wax is applied to the fabric, it creates a barrier so that when color is applied to a particular spot, it won't bleed to areas where it should not be. Beeswax and paraffin are mixed to certain proportions and are the type of materials commonly used. A kind of metal or wooden stamp is used to apply wax on the fabric. This stamp is like a cookie cutter device created with the design of the motif it is made to produce. Making Batik also requires the use of the best quality fabric and dye. Thorough washing of the cloth is necessary to get rid of unwanted dirt. The cloth is then stretched on a wooden frame after it is dried and ironed. Then the outline of the theme is made with a rough charcoal sketch. Each coat of waxing causes the design to develop clearly.

Batik fabric quality is based on the material used to make it. Silk ones are popular among people during formal functions or parties and suitable for people with other silk accessories to match. Cotton ones are also hugely popular and there are quite a number of designs and colors available. Cotton ones cater to those who are less formal and prefer to be casual. It is astonishing to know the various colors of designs to go along with various accessories would leave one spoilt for choice.

Modern fashion industry has given people around the world a huge choice of Batik items to choose from. It is common to see people wear such apparels on occasions like receptions or wedding ceremonies.
