Bats are really not as harmful as people think. They are good because they eat pests and take care of any insect problems in your neighborhood. Some people think that bats suck your blood, because of all the vampire myths, but there are only three types of bats that consume blood, and these specific species live in Latin America.

While bats are not as harmful as people think, they can still be harmful to humans. Because they can fly and can move around wherever they want, they can pick up diseases. Rabies and SARS can be transferred by bats, and there is a lot of debate on whether bats are really dangerous for this reason. While only 0.5% of bats carry rabies, most of the cases in humans in the USA that are not dog-related are attributed to bats.

Whether or not you like bats, you probably don't want them living and breeding in your home. If you have a bat in your home, there are a few things you can do to try and get rid of it. First you can try to shoo it out of an open window or door using a broom. You can also put on a pair of gloves, grab a net, and try to capture the bat.

If you know where bats are nesting, you find the hole where the bats are living and wait for them to leave for the evening, and then do your best to seal up the hole. This should be the start of eliminating your bat problem. You may have to open the hole a couple more times at night to let out any bats that could still be hanging around. You can also buy a certain type of spray that repels bats, but you do not want to spray the repellant directly at the bats in question, because they might attack.

Another way to get rid of bats is to kill them. You probably don't want to go with this option, because for one thing, you'll have a number of dead bats on your hands. You also will find that if you decrease the bat population in your area, you'll have more insects breeding and hanging around, because there won't be any bats to eat them.

The very best way to get rid of a bat problem is to call a professional. Professional exterminators have all the "don't try this at home" methods for bats that non-exterminators shouldn't try without the proper equipment and safety precautions. Exterminators are well trained in how to remove bats from your home with minimal damage and keep them out for good.
