Battle Of The Smartphones-the Iphone 4 8gb And The Htc Desire S
The release of the new iPhone 4S does not signify the end of the best selling iPhone 4
. Apple are actually releasing an 8GB version of this model in order to compete with some of the lower priced smartphones. Here we compare this new phone to the HTC Desire S, probably most popular mid range model of the past 12 months.
In terms of performance speed then the new iPhone 4 8GB struggles to compete with the HTC model. The Apple phone uses a 1Ghz ARM Cortex processor coupled with a PowerVR graphics processing unit. Together these chips ensure that the phone provides great speed as well as impressive visuals however the Desire S is better equipped in this department. Thanks to a powerful 1Ghz Scorpion processor the model feels like a faster phone which is even more impressive considering the device uses true multitasking features which should actually slow the handset down. Apple make up some ground when we take a look at the screens present on both of these models. The 3.5 inch Retina display used offers a massive 326 pixels per inch which is thanks to the phones excellent resolution of 640 x 960 pixels. The glass display also withstands the test of time thanks to it being constructed from toughened glass and also coated with a finish that is very resistant to fingerprints and scuffs. The Desire S offers users a S-LCD display measuring 3.7 inches and with a resolution of 480 x 800. These two figures combine to enable the model to display an impressive 256 pixels per inch. Against many other smartphones this figure would prove triumphant however it is no match for what the excellent iPhone can offer.
The iPhone 4 8GB offers some excellent multi media features that are a big improvement over what was included on the iPhone 3G and 3GS. With regards to still photography the phone sports a camera capable of capturing 5 mega pixel resolution. This may seem like a fairly industry standard figure but when coupled with the high quality optics used by Apple the resulting images look better than many phones sporting higher resolutions. An LED flash is present on this model making pictures look superb even when the lighting conditions are less than perfect. A 720P video capture facility completes what is a very good multi media package. The HTC Desire S offers the same resolution as the Apple handset but the results do seem to lack the overall quality. In terms of storage the 8GB iPhone offers far more internal capacity than the 1GB present on the Desire S however the HTC does offer a micro SD card slot meaning its total capacity is potentially higher.
The new iPhone 4 8GB will introduce a new generation of consumers to the quality of Apple products. The HTC Desire S remains a great mid range handset but the new iPhone will quickly become the phone of choice in this sector.
