Asking the right questions upfront is vital to finding out important information about the company you are potentially dealing with. Sometimes its hard to ask direct questions, but it is in your best interests to find out this information before you start signing legal documents and spend thousands of dollars. So here are my top questions you should ask upfront:

How long has the company been in business? Is the company CSA-A660 certified? for further information about the certification check out www.cssbi.ca

Is the company members of their local Better Business Bureau? If so, how long?

Does the company have any unresolved complaints against them with the BBB? Compare their answer to the BBB.org website

Does the company have any industry affiliations or references?

What is the guarantee on the building?

Where are the building parts manufactured? Is the steel produced from the company or a steel mill? Ask if you can tour the companies plant if they produce the steel.

How does their print marketing materials look and feel? Does their marketing materials explain and show the building assembly process? If not, request additional literature on the assembly process.

Does the company have a website? Is the website professional looking? A professional looking website takes time and costs money. Companies with unprofessional and cheap looking websites are probably dealers or brokers who buy steel buildings from a number of manufacturers. Then they mark up prices and resell those buildings to you at a higher price.

Does the company have actions or judgements against them by the attorney general of their province? Again, confirm this online or with a phone call to your local attorney general.

Is your salesperson a dealer, distributor or broker? Ideally, you want a salesperson that works directly for the manufacturer instead of a dealer. Dealers buy buildings from many manufacturers and mark the prices up.

Does the company have any buildings in your area for you to visit and look at?

Since this is a major purchase for you, asking important questions like these in advance will help you tremendously. Major companies selling steel buildings have typically been in business for a long time. This is an indicator they are probably quite reputable, but never assume and always ask questions and research who your are dealing with.
