ISO 9001 certification is not required. You can have a business and not go through the process of certification if you wish. However, you will definitely miss out on its benefits. Large companies often do not transact business with companies that are not ISO certified. Passing the certification means that your quality management system is approved by the international standards. So if you miss out on this, you might be missing out on generating larger profits as well.

If you, however, decide to go for it, you can achieve it by following five simple steps. The first step is to put into writing your measurable objectives. Be specific as much as possible so there are no gray areas. Identify objectives that can be measured so you know if you have already reached it or not. If customer satisfaction is what you are after, quantify it by giving a percentage.

The second step is to identify components of the process that needs improvement. Note that improvements do not end; there is always something better. Every member of the team should be committed in making the system and the process a lot better, constantly. Keep in mind that change is the only thing that is constant so better keep up with it.

Even before your ISO 9001 registration, you should inform your employees about the changes that are about to happen in the system. The change will start from the management all the way down to the workers so they should be well informed ahead of time to prepare for it. As the leader of the organization, you have to communicate with your employees how each of their effort contributes to the goal of the company so they feel significant to the entire operations.

Honesty is still the best policy, whether you plan to go to ISO 9001 registrar or not. Lying and telling your people to lie for you will result to a bad reputation. Never attempt to hide facts just so your company stands out from the rest.

Lastly, it will benefit you more if you decide to hire a consultant. iSO 9001 certification is not a matter that should be handled lightly. The consultants are expert quality evaluators as well. They are able to spot flaws in your system that you might have missed.
