Be Prepared When Boating

We were boating on beautiful Lake Powell last summer

. By coincidence our neighbors were down there the same weekend. While we didn't make any plans to see them there, we were out boating the second day when we thought we spotted the wife and her three kids, where was the husband? We hurried and flagged her down and asked where her husband was. The story unfolded as they were deep in a finger canyon and their new boat wouldn't start. After trying for several hours the husband decided he was going to hike out of the canyon and go for help. When he had been gone for about a half hour, without rhyme or reason their boat started. Not knowing exactly where her husband was as they were miles from anywhere, she was heading back to the marina to get help.

It was 110 degrees that day, her husband wasn't carrying any water, and just flip flops for shoes and miles and miles to go through sagebrush and sand to try to find help for his family. It was a dire situation. I couldn't believe the story as we heard it. I talked the wife into going back down the canyon and look for her husband instead of going for a half hour boat ride to the marina. She finally did and there was her husband standing on the rock by the waters edge he had left from. When he finally hiked to the top of the canyon wall he watched his family start the boat and take off so he hiked back down to wait. What a nightmare this could have been. The had a marine gps system luckily so they knew where they had left the husband. The moral of this story is, be prepared for an emergency when boating!

It was a scary day, but all turned out fine. A marine GPS on Lake Powell or any other large lake is vital to a safe and enjoyable boating trip. The amazing thing was that we just happened by at that very moment. If you have ever been to Lake Powell you know that it is gigantic, you could boat for a month and not run into anyone you knew. It is that big.

Nothing is better that a day on the lake, except being prepared for any unforeseen emergency, especially a little extra water, sunscreen, food and a marine GPS. Happy boating!
