Isnt it ironic that so often in this life the very people who trade their freedom for security in the end discover that they never had any true security at all? Think about the six and seven figure stockholders and employees of Enron years ago. Some of these people had worked their entire lives building that wealth just to have it all evaporate overnight. I actually watched someone go through this in the company that I once worked for.

It was a senior manager that everyone had a great deal of respect for. He was one of the few people in corporate America that I truly enjoyed working for. He had high integrity, he was a people person, he knew his stuff and he had dedicated well over twenty plus years of his life to building this company and he was a huge champion of the company, a true company guy if you will.

What I watched happen to him was very peculiar, but it was something that really did not surprise me being that were dealing with corporate America. After over twenty years of building this company and being one of the top performers in the entire country and helping to run some of its biggest and most successful facilities, during some restructuring he was told that he either had the choice of keeping a job but being demoted to a lesser position or not having a job at all.

Now this is a person who I watched at one time commute up and down an entire state, covering two huge districts to make things go well for this company when an economic recession hit and they needed to cut back on management. He did the job of two people. This is also someone who was doing this for his company during a time when his wife was literally on her deathbed. He was committed to this company because he believed in it and what it did for himself and the other people who worked there.

I watched them basically tell this man that he either would take a demotion or would not have a job. Meanwhile they were giving some other person his job. So it wasnt that his job wasnt there anymore, but someone who had probably just played more political poker than he had was now getting the job that was once his.

This is precisely why I never really bought into any company trying to convince me that they would look after my interests in my twilight years in exchange for my freedom during some of the best years of my life. Hogwash. Heres the thing. You must be willing to dare if you are looking to become very successful in your own enterprise. Nothing is guaranteed in life, but what better guarantee could you possibly have then yourself?

Learn to take smart, calculated risks to pursue the lifestyle that you dream of. Know that you are your own guarantee because you can only guarantee how hard you will work and what you are personally willing to do. Meanwhile you cannot guarantee, nor can you predict what another person or company will do. This does not mean that you should throw all caution to the wind and risk losing your shirt on a whim.

What it does mean however, is that you should get the necessary facts about an opportunity and be aware of the worst case scenario. After that you should do everything to stack the odds in your favor. Learn the business; invest in a good mentor, etc. Then go for it. Become a savvy risk taker and in the end of it all chances are that you will get much more accomplished than those who traded their freedom for a false sense of security.
