Be a Sales Champion
Christmas should be a time for relaxing but all too often it is really stressful
as people rush to get in their last minute shopping often throwing any budget (if they had one) out of the window and putting it all on their credit card to worry about later.
Previously we have talked about Saving in advance with a savings account or Christmas Savings Scheme such as
Park Hampers but here we are going to look at another way of keeping the cost of Christmas under control.
Why not become one of those people who does their Christmas shopping a year in advance in the January sales. To do it well it takes some thought as you need an idea about what you buy 12 months in advance but the planning can pay off literally.
If you have been wanting to buy something that it out of your price range the January sales would be a great place to pick it up for less.
Planning what you want to look for before you hit the sales is a really good idea, the more focused you are the more likely you are to get everything you want and not get distracted by something else.
Here are some tips to help you out:
Make a list. This will make you more focused, you can of course buy things that are not on the list but it will help you make sure that you got what you went to the sales for or that you found alternatives for the items on your list. It is easy to get excited and buy things that you later regret.
Not everything in the sales is a bargain. As well as knowing what you want to buy, find out what it normally costs so you can be sure that it really is a good price.
Christmas wrapping paper, cards, crackers Christmas decorations etc are things that you use every Chrismas and you can often find them reduced by about 70% in the January sales so this is a great time to buy them.
Put together next years Christmas gift list. Also include presents for any birthdays or weddings that you know about and add gifts to the list for those. Make the most out of January sales by buying these presents ahead of time. As well as having your shopping finished early you will also have saved money.
Don't spend more than you can afford. Remember the reason for hitting the sales was to keep costs affordable getting yourself into debt for the sake of a bargain is not wise - if you can't afford it don't buy it.
It is a good idea to read the shops policy for returns before you buy in case you want to return it. You wont be saving money if you have paid for something you no longer want.
If you don't fancy heading out in the cold then you can still take advantage of the discounts by shopping online. In fact a lot of shops start their online sales on Christmas day itself.
If you have to borrow money on a credit card or an overdraft the charges and interest you pay could make the must have bargain a lot more expensive.
