Be persistence like that of an ant

Be persistence like that of an ant

Be persistence like that of an ant

It amazes me to think that an ant can teach us a thing or two about being persistence in our life. Have you ever seen anant carry an object from one place to another? Perhaps you have seen an ant carry a leaf or food scraps. Ants have the capacity to drag enormous objects compared to their size. An ant that drags a grasshopper for example is said to be dragging about six times its own weight. That's about the same as if a man was dragging four and a half tons of weight. So much power in such small creatures!

Then there is the determination of persistence in the ant. I remember when I was observing an ant carry a piece of what seemed to be a chip of a rock or something like that. Anyway, as it was carrying this rock along, I decided to place my hand across its path to see what it would do. Sure enough the ant would just find another route around my hand. I then placed an empty flower pot. The ant went to the right and around the pot with its rock still in its grip. What could I say to that ant? So much willpower!

In life we are often confronted with setbacks presented to us in all forms tragedies, health issues, family problems financial difficulties and many others more. Most of us understand that there is very little we can do about the setbacks. Yet, some people seem to get by the situation. It seems as if they have the persistence of that of an ant. So how can we be like them? Surely, we don't have the physical grip like that of an ant, but out mental grip can be strengthen to match that of such little creatures.

Persistence, as one dictionary defines the verb "persist", is to "to hold firmly and steadfastly to some purpose, state, or undertaking, despite obstacles, warnings, or setbacks." Other words that carry the same meaning are: determination, perseverance, diligence and resolution.

In our day to day life, persistence is a quality all of us must have and develop in order to get through the day. Without it we cannot achieve anything of true, lasting value. Persistence is what keeps all the other principles mention at the beginning of this book together. When things get difficult in life, persistence probes your motives as to why you want to achieve your goals as well as test the mettle of your commitments made to reach your goals.

For example, you are currently working in a low paying job and your goal is to have more income to provide a better quality of life for yourself and your family. You decided to enroll in a course knowing that such qualification leads to jobs with higher incomes. The first quarter of the year comes and goes, the second quarter comes and goes, but then somewhere in the third quarter you lose your job. Now what will you do? Will you stop your studies and find another job? Will you continue studying and now your partner will be the primarily income earner? Will you stop your studies all together? Persistence answers these questions for you.

Let's look at how we can be more persistence. I have listed a few points that can help us:

Grip on. Like the ant, hold on to your determination to get want you want in life. This means not giving in to negative feelings you may be experiencing.

Focus on you goals. Have a clear picture of your goals as you want it. Have your goals written in point form and carry it around with you. Read it over at least two times a day. This will help you keep focus on your goals.

Ants have daily tasks much like we have work or home tasks to complete. These tasks no matter how mundane, helps us to build character. When confronted with bigger tasks in life, our training in smaller tasks, helps us to deal with bigger issues in life. Don't undervalue your small daily tasks.

I hope you have enjoyed this article. Although small in size, they have great persistence. Please, hold on to those goals of your and persist.
