Beat Social Anxiety - 5 Tips That Work

If the thought of going to a very important social event makes you feeling weak and nervous

, your hands shaky and clammy, and your general bearing awkward and uncomfortable, you're not alone. Below are some tips to help you beat social anxiety.

Don't think you're alone.

Not many people know this but there is a small number of people who suffering from the same condition as you do - social anxiety. The thing is, not everyone who has the symptoms of social anxiety go to doctors to have their condition treated. If you would only think that there are people, who like you, suffer from this agonizing condition, you will be more comfortable seeking for help. It would also be easier for you to find effective ways to cope with the symptoms.

Don't worry about what other people might or might not think of you.

Social anxiety is based on irrational fear that you are being negatively judged by other people. Once you understand that the 'judgment of people against you' all just happen in your head, you can behave more appropriately around people.

The truth is, your self-consciousness, your thoughts, the people's judgment about you, their criticisms and the looks they give you, are all inaccurate pictures of what's really happening around you. You may think that the people around you notice how much your tremble or how awkward you look but actually, no one notices a thing. The sensations, your thoughts, and the judgment you perceive from others begin and end in your mind. If you take these off your head, you will see from a realistic point of view how you and other people truly behave. Eventually, you will come to realize that your fears are not only irrational, but are excessively overblown.

Remove your negative self-beliefs.

If you think people see you as unattractive, unimportant and dumb, you are likely to behave that way. Remember, behavior is based on thoughts. Following this belief, you can reverse the situation and make social interactions a bit less stressful for you. Think that you are an interesting, smart and attractive person and you will emulate the same thoughts in your action in no time. Stop nagging yourself with criticisms; instead talk yourself into believing that you are some worthy of other people's admiration.

Focus on your environment.

This is two-fold. First, when you tune in to your environment, you start to take the focus off yourself, and second, you get to interact with others better since you can pay more attention to what's going on around you.

Practice paying attention to others and your environment and not on yourself.

The problem with people with social phobia is they think too much about themselves, how others think about the, and how other people perceive them. Reverse this thinking and you will see that social situations are not as harmful as you made yourself to believe. Whenever you have the urge to think so much about yourself, try to redirect your attention to others. Doing this will effectively prevent the symptoms and eventually, this will help you beat social anxiety.
