Beat The Rail Strike: Organise Your Virtual Office And Get Your Employees Working From Home

How is your company going to manage when it is hit by travel chaos next month

? Businesses all over Britain are bracing themselves for the national Rail Strike, due to start on April 6th. Four days of industrial action are planned by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT ) and the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA), in a dispute about working practices and job cuts. Gordon Brown is calling for more dialogue between unions and employers, and Downing Street says that the PM hopes discussions at the conciliation service Acas will bring about a resolution and avoid strike action. The Unions say they are still available for further talks, but a meeting on earlier this week between Network Rail (NR) and the RMT and TSSA failed to reach any agreement.

The strike was called as rail employers made plans to cut 1,500 jobs and change working practices to enable more maintenance and repairs to be carried out at evenings and weekends. Unions claim that the changes will have a detrimental effect on the safety of the railways. It was originally feared that the strike would be called over the Easter break, but the unions have deliberately avoided this so that the general public's travelling plans are not disrupted over the Bank Holiday. Robin Gisby, Network Rail's Director of Operations and Customer Services, says contingency plans are well advanced, and aim to keep as many trains as possible running during the strike.

A national rail strike will nevertheless have a severe impact on transport services and on Britain's business and commerce. Businesses and employers will now have to bear the brunt of the industrial action as commuter chaos is likely to kick off just as their staff are returning to work after the Easter holidays. Add to the mix ongoing staff relations problems at British Airways which are disrupting the plans of those who need to fly to keep their businesses running, and you have a recipe for commercial disaster. So how do you keep your business running when you and your staff cannot make it into the office? By careful forward planning and preparation, and by the strategic deployment of the latest in online technology, of course.

A Software as a Service (SaaS) or Cloud Computing solution could be the answer you are looking for. With the latest in online technology, working from home is a real option now for most of us, as it can make the time you spend there much more productive. Some SaaS services can be expensive, but shop around and you will be able to find something affordable with all the features you need. The best of the SaaS providers will give you lots of useful online features such as Document Management, Timesheets, Project Planning and Resource Management, and Business Intelligence Reporting. Once you are set up with your SaaS service you will be able to access it from home, from your office, your clients' offices, from hotel rooms - wherever you need to be.

Forget the hassle of storing your files and folders on your company network, which ties you to a single geographical location. With a SaaS service you can organise all your documents and folders, read and update them, and share them with colleagues and clients, whether at home, in the office or travelling. As a matter of fact I am using it at home right now, to create this article. Think of it as a complete virtual office, which you can use any time travelling in to work is not an option for you.

An online SaaS service makes working from home so much more simple, effective and productive. Once your people get used to using Cloud Computing technology they'll wonder how they ever managed without it. Just imagine, no need to struggle in to the office when public transport isn't running, be it due to industrial disputes, severe winter weather or just traffic snarl-ups.

Transportation problems are not the only reason you should be considering offering home working to your staff. Need to stay at home when your child minder is off sick? No problem. Want to work quietly on your own, away from the distractions of a busy office? Stay at home and work in peace and quiet with SaaS. Got a cold and don't want to spread it all round the office? Why struggle in to work when you could do so much from the comfort of your own home?

Now is the perfect time to check out this web-based technology, as there are lots of offers and deals out there right now. So, don't waste any time: beat the strike, get your business organised today with SaaS.
