Become An Alcohol Expert - Alcohol-related Jargon

If you are to be a bartender, you should at least know the different drinks, how to make them, some tricks and other stuff that a bartender usually knows and does. But to seperate yourself from the thousands of other people who just take a few days course and become "bartenders", you should read up on some stuff regarding the drinks you are serving. Here are some typical jargon you will see and maybe get asked about (and you could probably show off a little with it) in your bartending career.

The two most common words you will hear in regards to alcohol are proof and distillation. Here are their actual meaning.

Proof

This is the strength of the alcohol and it has a scale of 200 degrees, where each degree represents 0.5 percent of alcohol per volume. So a typical liquor like vodka would then be a 80-proof spirit, which equals to 40 percent alcohol (80*0.5=40).

Distillation

Here we are talking about the process of converting the liquid into gas and then cooled of and converted to liquid again. This is most used to create spirits. You take liquids that contain some alcohol and you heat it up. Then the alcohol will vaporize first, as it has a lower boiling point than water, and you will trap that condensation and later transform it into liquid again, and this time it will be more concentrated. The distillation can be done in two basic ways, which are the pot still and the continuous still. The pot still are for those making this in smaller amounts, while the continuous still is often found in mass production factories and other places.

Now you have a few basic information on the common (or should I say rare?) jargon that are related to alcohol, and these are most often related to whiskey. Now if you get asked or someone are going to test you, you can show off your alcohol knowledge.
