, it makes a refreshing change to find somewhere that goes against the grain. Holt, a charming Georgian market town tucked away in North Norfolk, has a real sense of community thanks to its many family-run businesses and independent stores.

Those taking a weekend break Norfolk will find that Holt is home to an array of fashion boutiques, jewellers, galleries and gift shops as well as a whole host of restaurants, bars and cafes. There are a few chain stores here, including Fat Face, Joules and a Croc shop, but the majority of places are independently-run, from the new beauty boutique Scarlet tucked away near Chapelyard, to Bakers & Larners department store which has occupied a fair chunk of the High Street for the past 240 years.

luxury hotels in Holt are full of holidaymakers who, once they've visited the nearby coast and countryside, will venture into Holt for a spot of shopping, and they're bound to bag themselves an interesting memento or two. Besides the main stretch, there are three separate shopping courtyards here; Appleyard, Chapelyard and Lees Yard, each one offering something different. Appleyard is home to an independent bookshop, interesting cook shop and children's clothes and toy shop, while Chapelyard has all sorts of eclectic stores, from one specialising in bird food, bird baths and so on, to another selling home furnishings shipped in from Spain. And then there's Lees Yard, with its smart wine store and cook shop, a boutique selling lots of lovely leather goods, and a gallery that's attracted worldwide attention for its paintings lately, thanks to a recent exhibition by child prodigy Keiron Williamson.

Galleries are one thing that Holt isn't short of (there must be almost a dozen) and they include The Photographers' Gallery, at the far end of the High Street, where photographs by BBC Springwatch presenter Chris Packham recently brought in the crowds. So if you are staying in one of the Norfolk Luxury Hotels, make sure you make time for some shopping in Holt - and get there early, as the car parks fill up quickly!
