This is the fifth series of "Become a Banner Ad Expert Starting Today." In the first few series I covered things like "What is a Banner Ad, Different Kinds of Banner Ads and How to Advertise." Welcome to Series V, let's get started!

Is There Guaranteed Results?


As in all advertising there is no magic formula or mystical pixie dust that you can sprinkle your banner ad with to make it work. There are many different variables that come into play with all advertising. I would be telling a "story" if I told you I had all the answers. Many banner ads and their successfulness have been due to extensive trial and error experiments. If you submit your banner ad to a company to post, they are going to monitor its effectiveness. If the banner ad does not do very well they will start trying other ideas for you, as in placement on a specific site. Again for someone to tell you they can obtain guaranteed results with a specific ad is telling you fibs.

A Few Things to Make an Effective Banner Ad

With anything you do in life, there are always tactics you could approach any opportunity to become more successful. In Banner Advertising I have found the following list very beneficial to me and my banner ads.

Relevant- Always post your banner ad on a site that has relevant content. Don't try to sell dog bones on website that does lawn mowing services.

Keep it small- Remember, in a previous series I talked about loading time. If your banner ad is too large it will take a while to load. People don't want to sit around waiting for a site to load.

Eye Candy- The eye candy on the banner needs to pique an interest. You need to provide an intriguing ad but don't be too secretive.

Animation- Animation is key to banner advertising. Just think of all the words and sentences on a site, they all flow together. An animated banner ad draws the reader's attention because we are drawn towards movement.

Don't lose your clicker- If you specifically put up a banner ad for a certain product or service than link to that area. I see way too many people link to an irrelevant site or their home page and the person is then confused and gives up. You have to give specific steps!

Keep it Simple Stupid- The simpler the better. Simple banner ads with animation will drive you better results than complicated ones.

See you at the top- You only want to be at the top of the page or the side above the fold. Think of the last time you were on a site and clicked on a banner ad that was at the bottom.

As you read through the above tips, you could see a common theme to follow. You want to make sure your banner ads are eye catching, intriguing, and placed in the prime locations on a website. When you follow these ideas you find that the people that click on your banner ads are more likely to become customers because they are like minded individuals.

Targeting Your Banner Ads


Wouldn't you love to only advertise to people that are interested in your product or service. There is such a way and it is called Target Advertising and it involves keywords that advertisers can buy that they want to target. Your banner ads can be targeted to searchers based on their internet activity. For example if you sold bird supplies such as cages, food, toys, and vitamins you could use a keyword such as "pet birds." This would be a relevant topic since bird owners need all the items you offer.

Wonder How All This Works

The internet is a constantly evolving entity that has been growing at an exploding rate, and must advertisers know this. Advertisers know that the majority of internet users have cookies enabled on all sites which allows the sites to gather information. All websites have cookies to see where the internet user goes and what they click on. Based on obtaining this information websites are presenting each visitor with a relevant ad based on their browsing history.
