Become a Goldsmith and Master the Art of Jewellery Making

A person with an eye for design, good manual skills and the heart of an artist will find great satisfaction in a career creating fine artworks as a goldsmith. One need not live the life of the starving artist at all, and can in truth make a good living doing this work. Starting out, there are good options for engaging in training in the craft. Learning these venerable and ancient arts will begin in craft-specific trade schools for the goal oriented, or local fine arts colleges for courses to begin familiarization with the techniques knowledge and skills needed.

Whether a person is a rank beginner or a more accomplished artist, engaging in a course of study and training can truly provide all the skills needed to insure success. Local applied arts courses are good initial options for a person exploring the craft, but more goal-directed students will find highly advanced, well-known and specific schools offering the full range of training to gain confidence and professional employment as a goldsmith.

Some of the training one will gain in better schools includes basics such as metallurgy, CAD/CAM design, illustration and drawing, gemology, horology (for those interested in fine timepieces) jewelry and art history and appreciation. The craft skills would be the primary focus of course, and include bench skills such as basic tools knowledge, hand working of metal, welding, soldering, laser welding, tool making and selection, mold-making, casting, wax techniques, engraving, work holding fixtures, pre-production and production techniques, among other necessary skills and knowledge.

In the process, one will gain the craft and artistic skills to begin a career in earnest, or continue to study this ancient art more deeply. At that level, additional doors can be opened to a successful student abroad, or to work with respected bespoke jewellery makers nearer home.
