Become familiar with the term SIPS!

Traditionally in the UK, houses have tended to be built from good old bricks and mortar. Sometimes stone is the locally accepted alternative, and developments in the building industry have brought in thermal blocks that provide a fast and efficient way to construct the "unseen" inner skin of a dwelling or extension. These are great products. Solid, efficient and accepted by us all.

Building design and construction is now, quite rightly in my opinion, focussing more and more upon the need to create buildings from materials that are primarily GREEN: thermally efficient, manufactured without destroying large chunks of the expendable elements of this planet, and erected without the massive amounts of waste that are so common on building sites.

Certain geographical areas have seen their dwellings built from timber. Timber frame housing is great. It is lightweight, easily handled and fast to create. You build a timber frame and then add a skin on either side to make it weatherproof and durable. Render, timber cladding, stone, brick... they can all form the weatherpoof barrier between the timber frame and the inside acommodation.

What is a SIPS panel? It is a large sheet of OSB (the material you may see boarding up broken windows....why?.. because it is very strong and durable), made into a wafer bisciut with another sheet of OSB having a thick layer of insulation between them. The beauty of this product is that the product of the parts is so much stronger than the parts themselves. These panels are immensely robust and are perfect for creating the basis of a comfortable and secure room. They have passed all kinds of the most critical examinations concerning building products and have come out smelling of roses!
