Become a Citizen

The first requirement of becoming a diplomat is to have a citizenship of the residing country. If you are living as an immigrant, then you will not be able to apply for country's foreign diplomat. There are some age requirements as well in this regard. This factor largely depends on the country you are living in and the country you are looking to work in. different countries have different requirements. So, it is important to gather some important relevant information before making a start.

Take the Foreign Service Written Exam (FSWE)

The first step in the application process is to pass the Foreign Service Written Exam (FSWE). It is necessary to pass the exam in order to qualify for the next stage. This exam is administered by U.S. State Department once a year and held in almost all the major cities. You have to register yourself for the exam on the State Department site in order to take the exam. This is a comprehensive exam and covers various topics ranging from history to economics. If you want to pass the exam, then prepare yourself thoroughly with a good hold on foreign affairs and other important relevant topics.

Oral Exam

If you are able to pass the FSWE exam, then you will be headed towards the next stage which is based on oral exam. The major focus of this exam is to test your command on your native language along with the second language, i.e. the language of the country where you are planning to work.

Background Checks

After clearing the FSWE and oral exam, you are subjected to clear the background checks also. Your previous record really matters. If you have ever involved in any illegal affairs, then you might be rejected. Having a clear background is very vital for this job.
