Bed Bug Bite Vs. Mosquito Bites - How To Spot The Difference
A bed bug bite is an uncomfortable, large, itchy welt that appears on the skin
. It stings and can becomes quite swollen. They seem similar to a mosquito bite, but there are differences. There are many things to note when looking at the bites; these indicators will tell you if the bite is from a bedbug or a mosquito. Once you have ascertained what these bites are from, there are proper treatments to deal with these bites.
A bed bug bite is similar to a mosquito bite, but the differences are numerous. In fact, bed bug bites are often mistaken for common household insects bites because the bites usually look just like those caused by other parasitic blood suckers such as fleas, mosquitoes, lice and ants.
Like bedbugs, mosquito bites itch, show redness and also get very swollen. However, unlike mosquito bites, the first obvious signs of bites from bed bugs are small, numerous, flat (or sometimes raised) welts on the skin that always appear in a linear or clustered pattern. They always appear in these clustered patterns because of the bugs' tendency to feed on the same location over and over. The welts often will turn red and become itchy. Infections can occur if the bites are scratched.
Another sign of bedbugs is that you will be bitten every night while you are sleeping. This means that you will wake up each day with similar clustered patterns daily of large itchy welts. Bites typically occur on the areas that rest on the mattress, such as the hands, legs, back and sides.
The best way to treat bed bug bites is to first run lukewarm water over the bite for about a minute. This should minimize the inflammation and take some of the redness out. Also, remember to abstain from scratching as this can cause an infection. Ice packs will also relieve any redness or swelling.
If the bites are itchy, or you feel the bites are infected, apply a local antiseptic lotion or antibiotic cream or take oral antihistamines. The recommended topical steroid creams for bed bug bite treatment are lotions or creams that contain hydro-cortisone. The hydro-cortisone will help to stop the itch and will resolve any rash quickly.
If you do scratch the bite and infection occurs, it is best to consult a physician as the infection can spread quickly.
A bed bug bite is mostly just annoying, rather than harmful unless it is scratched. The bites usually do not sting or cause as much pain as a mosquito's bite, but they will cause some itching. The most important thing to note when you find bed bug bites is that the area of the home needs to be treated for bed bugs so that you can rid yourself of these pest and keep from getting any more bites.
