Bed Bug Traps The Proactive Approach
Bed bugs are a small insect whose bite is characterized by circular red marks
. They are not poisonous, nor do they lead to any major disease. But they are highly irritating and can seriously impair your sleep.
Bed bugs typically occur in the cracks between furniture, along the seams of the mattresses and pillows, even between picture frames and linings of bags and suitcases. They are commonly imported into homes from furniture in hotels, or public buildings and public transport.
If you are faced with a serious bed bug infestation, it is best to take professional help. However, if you have infestation at a very low volume, you can try using the bed bugs traps. If you have already treated your house for bed bugs, you can use the traps to get rid of any remaining bugs. The traps will also tell you if the infestation is on the increase or if it is declining. If you catch the infestation at a very early stage, you can use the traps from spreading the bugs all over the building.
Placing double sided tape on the cracks and joints of your bed is one of the easiest ways to discourage bedbugs. They are caught on the glue and cannot spread to other places. Sometimes instead of these, some plants leaves are used whose hairy surface acts as Velcro to trap bed bugs.
There are some electronic bed bug traps available in the market. They emit chemical lures to attract the bed bugs. Once the bug reaches the trap, it cannot escape.
You can use a latticed mat near the bed. The bed bugs love to hide in between the crisscross pattern. You can subject the mat to extreme heat in the morning to get rid of the bed bugs trapped there.
You can use simpler versions of home made bed bug traps. But remember, these will be an effective method of pest control only when the infestation has occurred at a low level. One way is to use the double bowl trap. You have two take two bowls, one larger than the other. Put water in the large bowl. You may use anti freeze but only if there are no children or pets in the house because they are highly toxic. In the smaller bowl, you should put a mixture of talcum powder and insect dust. The leg of your bed has to be put in the smaller bowl which in turn will be put in the larger bowl. This will trap the bed bugs in two ways. If any bug tries to climb up the leg, it will drown in the water of the bigger bowl. If any bug tries to come out of the bed, it will fall in the smaller bowl. It will not be able to climb out as the talcum powder makes that impossible. The insect dust then causes the death of these bugs. This trap will be effective when the leg is the only route on and off the bed. If sheets are hanging down from the bed to the floor, the bugs will escape that way.
Another variation of this simple trap is to take a bowl with smooth and steep inner surface. As bed bugs are attracted to carbon dioxide, you can put a few chunks of dry ice in the bowl. The bugs climb in but cannot climb out. You can make the side of the bowl slippery by putting in some talcum powder.
Whichever trap you use, remember that bed bug eradication on a large scale is a professional job and you should deal with an infestation as early as possible.
