Getting Rid of Bed Bugs
Did you hear that our country is literally infested with bed bugs? The infestation of some of the glitziest hotels in the country have brought this lingering problem into the light. My business calls for me to sometimes have extended hotel stays, so I began to pay closer attention to any information related to bedbugs. That's when I heard about Bedbug Out on an As Seen On TV commercial.
Bed Bug Facts
Bed bugs are tiny, but visible, insects that are nocturnal and feed off the blood of humans and other warm blooded beings. They start appearing at dusk but can be seen anytime especially if a chance to feed occurs. Because they would prefer to feed off humans, they're naturally drawn to our environment, and what better place to reside than in our beds! Also, they can survive for up to eighteen months without feeding even though they seek blood every five to ten days. The female lays a minimum of 300 eggs yearly; the eggs hatch 10 days after they are laid. Bedbugs grow to between 4-7 mm,are flat, reddish in color and are easy to see because they move very slowly.
Checking for Bed Bugs
The first thing you should do is to examine your bed. Remove the sheets and check the mattress, running your fingers along the upper and lower seams. Also take a look at the mattress tag and plastic around the edges as bed bugs often hide there.
Look for tiny black spots (smaller than poppy seeds) behind the headboard, translucent skins or actual bed bugs. Bed bug fecal matter are dark brown to black spots and stick to the surface. If it falls off, then it's not from a bed bug. You can also take a wet towel and wipe the spot to see if it smears. If it does, then it may be fecal matter.
Check inside the bedside table or any other furniture or fixtures near the bed. Bedbugs don't like the light, so they'll be hiding in darkened or shadowy areas.
As the bed bug develops, it sheds its skin which looks like the bug. Also, look for tiny white eggs (like rice) along the edge of the mattress.
During the early stages of infestation (if you or someone just brought one home), the bug bug(s) usually hide out in the mattress (and headboard). If this is your home and you're concerned you might have a few in bed with you, it would be wise to buy a special mattress cover. The cover will seal in the bed bugs, and over time they will die.
If you're in a hotel room, another good tip is to use the luggage stand to keep your bags off of the floor. This will prevent bedbugs from easily get into your things and end up hitching a ride home with you.
The reason I researched this information is that you and I could unknowingly pick up a bedbug or two from a hotel bed, drawer or floor and bring them home with us. Bedbugs reproduce rapidly, so it wouldn't take long for the house to become totally infested. So hearing about a product like Bedbug Out would come in really handy if this ever happened.
