Bedding Sets: Getting Your Head Around Thread Counts
Bedding Sets: Getting Your Head Around Thread Counts
Few things beat a good sleep in a comfortable bed. But there's more to a wonderful sleeping experience than just the bed frame and the mattress, your sheets can have a large effect on your comfort too. That's why so many expensive hotels and quality shops are keen to assure customers of their excellent sheets and their high thread counts - they want everyone to know they appreciate the importance of getting everything right.
However, to the uninitiated, promises of a high thread count can be rather baffling, as it can be hard to see how this is connected to the way the sheet actually feels. But keen beauty-sleepers everywhere will be glad to know that thread counts are easy to understand, once you know how. Put most simply, a thread count is the number of threads which are found within a sheet - they are normally measured by examining the threads travelling vertically and horizontally within one square inch of the fabric. The higher the concentration of threads, and therefore the higher the thread count, the softer and more comfortable the sheets are said to be.
As a general rule, thread counts can typically fall anywhere between something like 80 to 800, so there can be a big difference between sheets at the lower and upper ends of the scale. What's more, while the vast majority of sheets will feature a count of somewhere between 180 and 320, some manufacturers offer much higher thread counts for their very high-end sheets.
While the idea that the higher the tread count is, the softer the sheet will feel is a popular one, some people argue that once a thread count passes the 380 mark, it is hard to tell the difference. However, as sheets with a particularly high count are considered a luxury item, and have a price tag to reflect this, they are sure to remain the preferred choice for anyone hoping to enjoy an extra special, sumptuous sleep.
If you're choosing new sheets, it's a good idea to remember that while thread count is an important consideration, it's not the only factor you should bear in mind, the weight and heft of the fabric is important too - as is the style and design of course. Your bedding sets need to reflect your decor as well as offer you the comfort you need for a good night's sleep, so choose carefully and look forward to some excellent shut eye.
