Beds are available in a wide range of standard and non-standard sizes

Beds are available in a wide range of standard and non-standard sizes and ensuring that you find the right size of bed for you is just as important as making sure you get the right mattress construction, level of firmness and correct fitting.

Standard bed sizes vary from Single Beds, to Double Beds, to King size Beds, although there may be some minor variations in name for some beds. Many bed manufacturers will also sell queen size beds and some may also stock extra long Single Beds. The height of a bed can vary widely and depends upon the thickness of the mattress as well as how high the frame is.

As a general rule, purchase the largest bed which will comfortably fit into your bedroom and still allow for sufficient floor space. Even if you are a single sleeper, but you have the extra room to stretch out with Double Beds instead of Single Beds, purchase Double Beds or King size Beds instead as ideally, the more room you have to stretch out, the better. Similarly, if there are two people sharing a bed, consider opting for King size Beds rather than Double Beds. Increasing the size of your bed will affect the amount of room you need and your posture while you are sleeping, both of which are important factors to consider.

Single Beds, although allowing for more space in a room, are not ideal for adult sleepers as they do not give sufficient space for the sleeper to roll over from their back onto their front without having to shift their body to the side. This changing of positions can cause the sleeper to wake, resulting in disrupted sleep.

If there are two sleepers in the same bed, it is worth bearing in mind that, contrary to popular belief, Double Beds are in fact not double the size of Single Beds, meaning that two sleepers sharing the same bed in fact have less room than a single sleeper in Single Beds.

The next factor to consider is how long the bed is. It is important to realize that most manufacturer's super king size beds and King size Beds will be around 3 inches longer than Double Beds or Single Beds. This is particularly significant for those who are taller; however it will be likely to reduce the space between the end of the bed and the adjacent wall or any bedroom furniture placed in front of it.

Super King size Beds are an option, but only depending on build. If you are not of a particularly large build, you may not need the extra space in which to move. However, if your room will accommodate a bed of this size, it is always an option worth considering.
