Bedsores

Bedsores are skin ulcers that appear in areas constantly subjected to pressure

. Bedridden patients, those with paralysis and/or spinal cord injuries who can't change their position often develop bedsores at pressure points in the lower back, buttocks, elbows, knees, shoulders, heels and ankles. Other high risk groups are adults over 60, those with poor circulation, malnourished patients, and heavy individuals. Bedsores develop as a result of constant pressure on certain parts of the body, most commonly the bony protuberances such as elbows and heels. On traditional mattresses, these points come to bear inordinate amounts of body weight, because most beds lack the pressure distribution properties of memory foam or other more advanced materials. The development of a bedsore (or pressure sore) in an elderly or bedridden loved one can be a scary ordeal. Bedsores are painful and often require months of treatment before they heal. Bedsores can also be fatal if not cared for properly; therefore, it is important that family members are extremely involved in the treatment process.

Early sign of a bed sore is a red rash that looks much like a sunburn. If left untreated, full blown bed sores develop, resulting in open wounds with drainage, infections and even death. Bed sores can be successfully treated by providing air flow under the body and by removing moisture. As always, prevention is the best cure. But even fully developed bed sores can be cured by the use of natural sheepskin bed pads, heel wraps, etc. The bedsore should be cleaned with Saline solution and wrapped with an occlusive dressing. Occlusive dressing is a clear transparent bandage that can seal itself to the wound and is found at your local medical supply store. The bandage should also be left on for a few days before it is changed. It is recommended to keep your skin clean and dry. People who sweat heavily or who are incontinent are more likely to develop pressure ulcers. But do not go overboard. Having excessively dry skin can lead to sores, too. If you have dry skin, use a moisturizer after you bathe.

Prevention, however, is your best defense against bedsores. But the paralyzed or crippled patient cannot do this alone. He or she needs the support of his family, friends or relatives in the absence of a nurse. People who suffer from bedsores are usually deficient in a number of nutrients, especially zinc and vitamins A, E, ata balanced diet of which 70 percent is raw fruits and vegetables. Drink liquids (steam-distilled water, herbal teas, sugar-free Juices) around the clock to keep the colon clean. Eliminate animal fats, junk food, processed foods, fried food, and sugar. Get your fiber from oat bran Or ground flaxseeds. Fiber prevents constipation and absorbs dangerous toxins. The common thing that herbalists recommend is the application of myrrh to bedsores because of its astringent and antiseptic properties. Before you use this however, it should be tested on a small area of your skin to make sure that it doesn't causing further irritation, and it shouldn't ever be applied to an open sore.
