A maximum of ten combs can fit inside the frame, which are made of sheets of wax or plastic. Bees use the wax sheets as a starting point, where they will then deposit the nectar that they harvest. The best thing about the Langstroth hive is you can easily remove the frames to extract the honey.

Another artificial beekeeping hive that is frequently used is the top-bar hives, that originated from Africa. The design of top-bar hive results to honey that is considered of best quality, although the combs on this hive can no longer be reused after the honey is harvested. The top-bar hive has bars where the bees can hang wax combs.

Beekeeping Tips

Before you engage in beekeeping, it is important to choose the right location where you can best take care of your bees. It is best to place your bee hives near a garden, where the bees can be close to the nectar that they need. They should not be in an area that is high in traffic, nor in areas where there are a lot of children, so as not to put a risk to people who may be allergic to bee stings.

The beekeeping hive should also be placed where there is a water source, and one that is spacious enough to provide your bees some room to fly around. It should be in an area where there are no animal predators such as skunks and bears, and should also be well guarded to keep people who may want to harvest some free honey away.

You also need to check your local state regulations related to beekeeping. Some states have very strict regulations when it comes to locations where you can put the beekeeping hive, as well as some rules related to handling and packaging the honey that you harvest, in case you plan to produce honey for commercial consumption.
