Critical attention is something Ken Follett is pretty skeptical with

, and he makes sure he does not change his writing style due to the comments made by his critics. He doesnt change his approach due to his own fame either. He only changes direction when he thinks his character or the story needs it. There are times when he feels he has exhausted himself in a subject or a field, in that case he changes tack or starts studying new subjects. A similar situation occurred when he had just finished Lie Down with the Lions.

This Marks the Birth of the Pillars

At this juncture, he came back to an earlier idea about cathedrals and developed it into The Pillars of the Earth. Presently he is working on the subject of genetic engineering in the present day society. Its a Ken Follett project, so there is some natural suspense in the story though its not a thriller. In his novels, mostly things happen to his characters, and he starts writing about anything which attracts his attention.

Style Changes Only According To the Story

His approach to writing may also undergo a change as and when situation or the story demands it, and it is this very approach which is the biggest problem for his marketing persons. They dont know how the story is going to develop and therefore are unable to prepare the marketing thrust of the book. Even if the situations have serious consequences, he does not shy away from them, but at any point of time, he does not like to explain himself.

Lot of Research Goes Into His Work

Ken Follett pays a lot of attention to the field in which he is writing, and he also takes into account what kind of reception his other authors works have met with in the same field. He also notes that other authors do not use as many explicit love making scenes as he does, but he feels these scenes are central to his novel and therefore he continues to write the same way. He is very careful about choosing his field, as well as the taste and interests of his readers.
