Before buying the printer itself, it may be worth checking to see that it compatible cartridges can be used with it, and not just the "genuine" branded printer ink cartridges which have been specifically designed for the printer. The printer itself may have been fairly cheap to buy, however if the total cost of printer ink is added up, the whole process could turn out to be more expensive in the long run.

Compatible cartridges have been recognised for their ability to work just as well, if not better than, their more expensive "genuine" branded counterparts by large businesses, and they are now widely used, helping to save both the environment and money.

When looking for a printer which can be used with compatible cartridges, it is a good idea to remember that newer models on the market may not yet have had compatible cartridges designed for use with them. Always check first, and check that the compatible cartridges will be able to work in your printer without causing a malfunction or damaging the printer in any way.

Other ways in which you can help to keep the overall cost of your printing down is by checking the paper yield or how many pages per cartridge the printer is able to produce. Some printer ink cartridges such as black ink cartridges will sell per volume of ink but will not specify how many pages on average you can produce with them, so it is always worth checking this first.

Another factor to consider is how often the printer is used. If printing is kept to a minimum, then obviously this will lower the cost of printing. However, it is worth bearing in mind that printers need to be used at least once a week to ensure that the ink does not dry out.

Also, when purchasing a colour printer, check for one with individual ink tanks rather than a single tank for all colours. This means that if either magenta, yellow, cyan or black runs out, they can be replaced. It is also worth noting that black ink cartridges are cheaper than colour cartridges, so if it is possible, try to keeps colour printing at a minimum, and this will also help to save money.
