Guitar tabs are a way of someone writing down how a song is played without having to write out the musical composition. Tabs are a short form of stating the chords used in a song, their progression, if a capo is used as well as how the chords are formed in most cases. Tabs will generally have the words included as a reference so you know where the chord begins and ends in the lyrics of the song. If you learn how to recognize chords by ear, tabs are really not that helpful to you. Once you learn how to audibly recognize a chord, you can pick it out of hundreds of others by simply hearing it.
