However, there are many other methods of finding quality beginner guitar lessons than just finding an expensive instructor. If you aren't quite sure if guitar is the right instrument for you then there is no sense in spending a bunch of money to find out.

The first thing I recommend doing is to find a friend or family member that might have a used guitar you can borrow. You will most likely want to make sure it is a steel stringed guitar. I find that acoustic guitar is the best to start learning with but if you can find an electric that is great too. You will just have to make sure you can find an amplifier to practice with as well.

Guitar lessons come in many forms other than just practicing with an individual instructor. You could get a friend to teach you a few of the basics or sign up for group lessons which are often a lot less expensive since you split the cost of the instructor with other aspiring guitar players.

If you want to take a more independent approach when you are deciding if learning guitar is right for you then you can search the internet for free beginner guitar lessons. There are a lot of sites that provide such guitar lessons in hopes that you will enjoy them and purchase their full course or a subscription to their lessons. With most of these websites you will be able to learn a lot of the basics and play your first couple of songs before having to make a decision on whether to continue your training.

However, when you are ready to move on, I think it is very important that you find a course or subscription that covers all aspects of the guitar so that you get a complete and comprehensive set of lessons. If you decide that your learning style lends itself better to guitar lessons with an instructor rather than online, or in a self study course then you should check the local colleges for qualified instructors. You may even be able to get group lessons which will greatly reduce the cost and can be just as effective.

Whether you decide to find your guitar lessons for beginners online, through an instructor, or through a store bought self-study course, the most important thing is that you get started today. Most of the difficulty of learning a new instrument or anything new for that matter is motivation. So if you decide you really want to learn then make sure that you don't let anything slow you down at all. As long as you do this, you will be playing your favorite songs in no time at all!
