Being A Maid Of Honour Is An Honour

Some brides have their wedding days planned from the time they are children

. They know exactly where it will be, what they will wear and who will be their maid of honour. Usually they choose their sister or a best friend. Thats understandable because a bride needs a maid of honour she can trust and one that will support her in the weeks before the wedding as well as on the wedding day itself.

The weeks preceding a wedding are always busy ones and if a bride is working she may have to rely on her maid of honour to check boutiques, see to the flowers or help her with the invitations. More than that she will certainly need her to give moral support. Brides are often nervous and edgy coming up to the big day and a good maid of honour will be a calming influence. She will assure her that the cake will be tasty, the gown gorgeous and the day a huge success.

Sometimes the maid of honour will choose to give a speech at the wedding. Obviously someone who knows the bride as well as she does will be able to make it a very personal speech. She may recount childhood memories. She will probably mention shared experiences and certainly she will say how much the bride means to her. Her best wishes for the couple will, of course, be said from the heart.

A maid of honour who is either a sister or a best friend will usually have access to the brides home and she will usually know many of the guests too.. She will be able to help the couple make the seating plan. She may help them organise accommodation for out of town guests. She is the person who can give a second opinion on bands, clothes, make up and hairstyles. She should throw herself wholeheartedly into helping with the arrangements for the wedding. On top of all that the maid of honour has the responsibility for the bachelorette or hen party. It is up to her to ensure that it is a night to remember.

That is not to say she should override the couples wishes no matter how close she is to the bride. She should, though, be able to tactfully steer her clear of awful mistakes such as buying a gown that is obviously too tight or getting a hairdo that just does not suit. She can do this by suggesting options. It is a great help to the bride if the maid of honour is well organised and helps her to make the lists that ensure that everything is done and nothing is forgotten. Then when the wedding is over all she will have to do is admire herself in the photographs of the big day!
