Being Accountable As A University Administrator
Why is this? College administrators are essentially in charge of all of the finances that are involved on a college or university campus
. Whether its figuring out if there is enough funding for particular student or group of students to conduct research on behalf of the university or whether it is simply paying a university professor their monthly paycheck, a lot of management goes on behind closed doors- things that we, as students or outsiders never see or are privy to but which take place nonetheless.
Grant management is extremely important in the professional life of a college administrator or accountant. By having certain kinds of grant tracking software in place, college administrators are able to more effectively govern where the university can or cannot spend more money, areas that the college needs to cut back on financially and other aspects of their finances that will help to keep them well within budget.
Depending on how large or how small a particular college is, you may find that there are many different activities going on that require various sorts of financial agreements, funding and whatnot. It is, therefore, an immense help to have some sort of accounting or financial tracking software in place for grant managers or other college administrators to use. For example, when I was in college, I was part of a cooperative that consisted of several other students. At one point, we were all working on coming up with funding that we needed in order to conduct research for our theses as well as work on putting together a historical exhibit for a museum opening based on our research findings. So, who was it that funded all of this? The University.
Dont get me wrong; applying for a grant is no walk in the park, despite what you may have heard. Rather, there is quite a bit of paperwork involved as well as some back and forth between college administrators, departmental heads and other authorities within the university system and rightly so. As a college administrator or accountant, you want to make sure that any funds you are about to dole out are going to be used within well-defined guidelines so as to not violate any of the universitys rules. After all, the research is being conducted on behalf of the college that youre attending, so why wouldnt it be fair for the college to know exactly what the funds are going to be used for. And grant management helps administrators to manage exactly where those funds are being used and by whom.
