Being Alert When On The Move
When travelling, make yourself safe and comfortable
. Keep in mind your surroundings and how your vehicle affects them. According to research, 22% of all HGV accidents are because the driver is not alert enough and does not look around properly. HGV accidents are very dangerous as they can be more harmful than other types of accidents. This is why HGV courses are offered for HGV driver training purposes. With appropriate HGV training, you will be a better driver.
It is illegal to use mobile phones or other such hand held devices while driving. This takes your attention away while driving and you may lose control of your vehicle. Sometimes even the hands free kit proves to be a distraction because your mind is elsewhere when it is actually supposed to be on the road. Mobile phones make you miss road signs, loose lane position and speed, make you less aware of your surroundings, and make you react more slowly than you otherwise would. Facts show that using a mobile phone while driving means that you are four times more likely to meet with an accident.
The radio in your vehicle has its pros and cons. It can update you on weather conditions, traffic conditions, any road blocks, accidents and so on. With such updates you are able to plan your safest route to reach your destination. However, having it on too loud can distract you and others around you. It is also advisable to turn it off when loading and unloading goods. If you are driving with a passenger, ensure their safety with their seatbelt on. Inform them not to distract you while you are driving. Many countries have a law that states that all drivers and passengers must wear seatbelts. Having your seatbelt on, will greatly reduce the extent of injury in case you meet with an accident. In addition to that, try to sit as far back as possible from the dashboard or steering wheel in order to reduce the seriousness of injury.
Some people have the habit of hanging clothes in the vehicle! Dont do that because it can obstruct your view. You might place them at an angle that you think will not get in your way but in case of a heavy brake or acceleration, the clothes could swing forward and block your view. Furthermore, vehicle theft is very common today. Keep all windows and doors locked if you are sleeping in the vehicle or when you are away from your vehicle.
