Being Hip With A Fashion Mullet Hairstyle

The fashion mullet hairstyle, favored by many in the 'hip' crowd of today

, came on the scene in the 1960's. It has been in and out of favor ever since. The official name 'Mullet' was believed to come into being by a song called 'Mullet Head' in 1994. At that time, it was temporarily the rage and was call a hair disaster.

There are several different styles of this cut. The main one is short on top, sides, and long in back. Some have the hair shagged on the top and sides, which gives it a disheveled look. Layering on top is also popular. At one time permanent waves were used but that is no longer the vogue.

Many high school aged students, both boys and girls, have adapted this style. It is a favorite hair style with the hip-hop crowd, especially those who enjoy attending heavy metal gatherings. When shagged it is often impossible to tell if the hair has been washed as it always looks un-groomed.

Being hip and with the in-crowd is one of the reasons that younger people get this type of hairstyle. They state that it makes them feel 'free' and not having to follow conventions, such as regular hairstyles or haircuts. Many of their parents were familiar with this type of haircut back in the 60's which should say something regarding how current something of this type is.

The ultimate of people having this type of hairstyle is when the back hair reaches the middle of the spine. Some find difficulty with this, especially if they are working, so have to contain it in a braid or ponytail. It is very common to see someone with the mullet having hair this long.

This hairstyle has been around for a long time. If one asked their parents it was probably part of their youthful escapades. The style fell from favor but revived in 1999 at a Gucci Menswear fashion show where all the models sported the 'Mullet'. In that case the hair was almost shaved off at the top and sides.
