When a pregnant wife is diagnosed with high blood sugar content, the condition is called gestational diabetes. This condition presents itself due to hormonal changes in the pregnant women, thus the hormone insulin is not produced in the correct amounts needed by the body. If untreated, gestational diabetes affects both the mother and the unborn child. Common risks include cardiac and kidney issues for the mother and having a larger child and predilection to develop diabetes for the child.
The problem though of gestational diabetes does not just fall on the wife's shoulders but also requires greater care and understanding for the would-be father and husband. The following are some tips on determining and managing gestational diabetes for the mother's and child's long term well being and health.
Check dietary changes. This should be given a keen eye especially after the first two months of the pregnancy. Many may dismiss this as "pregnancy cravings" but observing thirst and hunger pangs of your pregnant wife can help in the early diagnosis of gestational diabetes. Try to observe how many times your wife feels thirsty despite drinking lots of water.
Check Energy Levels during Activities. Ask about how your wife feels after doing simple household work, trips to the mall or even walking up and down stairs. These are simple symptoms of overall weakness that may signal some problem internally.
Check with your Obstetrician. This is important in pre-natal care. One of the sure ways to determine if your wife has gestational diabetes is through a simple blood test. When there is an above normal reading as to the amount of blood glucose, then ask for advice on medications that can help manage the condition without any harm to your unborn child. This is important, as this is a problem not just for the pregnant wife but also for the soon-to-be father husband.
Aside from these checks, you also need to have a plan as to the diet and exercise for your wife suffering from gestational diabetes. You both need to be properly apprised and disciplined as to the correct way to handle this condition during pregnancy. If one is unable to properly manage it, there could be health consequences to the mother and child, during not only delivery but also long-term physical effects. Therefore, being married to a gestational diabetic is a problem that can be resolved and handled well for your whole family's health.
