Being More Casual at Typically Formal Events

Dressing up or wearing a suit are two things that can make many men uncomfortable;

not only are they things that you don't do often, but they're things that can be messed up easily. Matching the wrong tie or cravat to any suit is very possible, and it's something that happens every day but it isn't something that should be worried about. If you want to dress more casually at formal events, and not wear items like cravats or formal ties, then you just may be on to something as long as you can pull it off.

Depending on how well you know the guests of whatever event you're about attend, going with a casual look in contrast to a formal setting can be a great change of pace, let alone a great look. Simply going with a dress shirt and slacks, maybe with a tie, is something that people don't usually expect at formal gatherings (at least where everyone would be wearing suits so they're very formal gatherings).

But that's where you can dress casually and just about as casual as you can get without standing out too much. While it's just as easy to overdress with items like cravats and cummerbunds, it's just as easy to under dress and be too casual without the right garments. If you're not wearing a nice dress shirt to something like a wedding ceremony, you're in trouble, and you're only going to bring the wrong kind of attention to yourself. It's not a big deal if you don't like wearing really formal items like a cravat, since, after all, they're expensive, but it is a big deal if you're not dressing up to events like wedding ceremonies.

Being more casual at typically formal events can be just as good as dressing up very formally you'll stand out, in an easy way, and you won't have to spend a ton of money on garments that you won't be wearing that often anyways. As long as you can pull off the look, there's nothing wrong with wearing a dress shirt with rolled up sleeves, slacks, and a skinny tie. While that may sound formal to some, it's extremely casual to others, and depending on what event you're attending (and the other guests also attending), casual can be relatively conservative. Keep dressing casual as an option, and if you don't feel like dressing up, it's a pretty good option.
